Deer season has ended

Mark — Sat, 01/19/2008 - 22:05

Well, another deer season is over. Looking back, it wasn't a bad year.

Mac got him a doe, that was the only one we bagged. We had a chance at a couple of others but it was not to be. On one trip he had decided he wanted to get a buck. Two small deer walked out onto the pipeline we were on and we watched them for a while. A grown deer walked out but we couldn't tell what it was. By the time we could tell it was a small spike he was running around with the two small deer and we never got a shot.

Another time a doe walked out about 150 yards away. We waited, hoping it would get closer but it was starting to get dark and we decided to take a shot. Mac shot. BANG!. The deer just stood there. No response at all, it just kept feeding. As Mac reloaded it walked into the high brush and we had to wait. Later it came out again. We waited until she turned broadside. Mac shot again. BANG! Again, no response from the deer. It just kept feeding. By now I'm about to have a fit. I told Mac to reload and this time aim at the top of her back. After getting ready he shot again. This time we got a response.

I don't know if he just nicked her or if she figured out she was being shot at. Whatever it was she took off like a jet flying low to the ground. She came towards us at an angle towards the opposite side of the pipeline, to our left. She turned again to our right and proceeded to run in a large figure eight, entering the woods about where she came out. It was something to see. Mac had never seen a deer running in full stride. I think he now appreciates just how fast they are.

In addition to deer we saw a coyote, a raccoon, several rabbits, and lots of birds. All of this was nice, but what really made it all worthwhile was Mac and I got to spend some time together. Yep, it was a good season.
